Program Notes
Letter from a Young Poet is a short work composed in early 2008 for cellist David Russell. The work is cast in quasi-Rondo form: the A sections act as a Theme & Variations, yet the B sections remain unchanged. The piece draws its inspiration from the early correspondence of poet/composer/author Paul Bowles, specifically a letter written in 1931 to Gertrude Stein on one of the young man’s early trips to Tangier.
