Permanently and photo shoot

This afternoon, I began work on “Permanently”, the middle song of at least a moment.  Kaity Volpe came to get some composing “action shots”.  Despite the general silliness that we were both infected with, and the gloomy weather, we both managed to get something accomplished.  Since my piano is still broken (more on that later), I used the piano in my boyfriend’s parents’ sunroom.  As usual, once I started working, I essentially forgot everything else in the room.  Kaity, though, assures me that she had the camera inches from my face at times, and that she was climbing all over the furniture to get shots.  At one point, we had all of the lights on to chase away the gloom, and opened two of the sliding glass doors to the terrace so that she could get direct shots of my face as I sang and pounded my way through some accompaniment ideas.  (We put everything back in place when we finished!)

The site transfer is closer than ever.  It may, in fact, take place this weekend!  I’ll be doing little tests this weekend.  Then Dennis 4.0 will launch as soon as I’ve got some video content for you!

Tobenski-Algera Relaunch and more photos

I think that the blog here is in its nearly-final form.  It echoes the bulk of the site nicely, now.  For anyone wondering, I modified the wonderful theme “veryplaintxt”, which took some doing, but turned out nicely, I think.

This, along with some other work soon to be unveiled, opens the door for a lot of the impending changes to take place rapidly.  The reworked Works will be unveiled as soon as the data entry is finished (there’s a lot of information for only having written 27 works!).

Another thing to look forward to is the relaunch of the Tobenski-Algera Concert Series.  We took a short hiatus, and will be relaunching in December 2008 with a program of art song by young and emerging composers.  We recently put out a call for scores, which we’ll also put on the website.  We may have a special treat on the concert, so stay tuned for more details here and at www.tobenskialgera.com.

Kaity Volpe and I had another photo session on Thursday afternoon during my weekly composition lesson with David Del Tredici.  She was the fly on the wall while David and I went through “To You”.  My lessons have been particularly kinetic of late, and Thursday was no exception.  Since I’m working on songs at the moment, we structure the lessons so that I sing while David plays.  This format gives us both a very clear sense of the piece.  In non-vocal music, I may hack through the piece myself at the piano (a rare occurrence since I’m not a very great pianist), or David may play through it (a much more common possibility), or with some works, we listen to the Sibelius MIDI playback.  With the singing/playing format, though, David sits at one piano (his office at CCNY has two baby grands) while I stand at the other to plunk out notes every so often to make sure I’m right.  (As Ned Rorem would point out here, just because I wrote a piece doesn’t mean that I’m qualified to perform it.  Nor does it mean that I remember how it goes.)  We went through the song a few times, making minor editions along the way (“You keep slowing down here – you should add another tempo marking there.”  “You should inject the augmented sixth from the A section into the recap to make it a clearer echo.”), and Kaity got some really spectacular shots.  The lighting was ideal – the sun was just right, and made for some beautiful lighting effects.  Each session makes more and more excited about the project!

Blog under construction

Please forgive any weirdness that goes on in the next few days with the blog – I’m blindly feeling my way through the world of WordPress themes in order to make the blog look/feel identical to the site proper in preparation for merging the two properly.

“To You”, updates, and Vodcasts!

I finished composing “To You” this past Wednesday, leaving only “Permanently” to be written in at least a moment, which I’ll start tomorrow afternoon.

This past week, I also performed two really nice songs by two of my colleagues, Eric Taxier and Casey Hale, at City College as a part of the Musicians Accord reading sessions.  It was a lot of fun, and I look forward to singing more by these two composers.  I also had two minor pieces read by the ensemble: a short Gymnopedie, and an arrangement of “In the dark pine-wood” from till night is overgone

Look forward to a new photo gallery this week.  I took some headshots with a wonderful photographer, Kaity Volpe, over the summer, and I’m finally putting them up!  (More on Kaity later….)  With the new photos will come a new gallery in general.  Although it will look very, very similar, there will be significant changes in the way it operates.  This shift presages larger, more fundamental changes to come in the next few months.

In the next few weeks, I’ll be starting a new project to inclusion on the site: a series of vodcasts on the artistic life.  I’ll be doing these videos in several series of seven “episodes” over the coming year or so.  Each “episode” will be a general discussion of challenges and considerations in a young artist’s life – things like the search for a Voice, and the lamentable scarcity of patrons in this day and age.  I have the first two Series planned, and will start taping the first in November.  The only thing that’s missing is a title!  I’m looking for any suggestions I can get.  Anything?

Tobenski Music Press

The Tobenski Music Press store is now open for business!  Choral works are still unavailable (although listed), but all vocal and chamber works are on sale.  Sales are conducted through PayPal, so it’s absolutely secure.  New scores will be added to the store once they have been premiered.

Store / Donations / Future projects

In a fortuitous turn of events, PayPal has recently created a shopping cart.  So in the next month, I’ll be using that to create the Tobenski Music Press storefront for the site.  It will save me probably weeks of coding and frustration in creating my own from scratch.

I’ve also added two new items to the Links page: a link to donate to the Tobenski-Algera Concert Series via The Field, and a button to make a donation to me directly via PayPal.  Why w/c/should you donate?  Well, what better way to support the arts than to support an artist directly?  Also, your support will help me to realize a few new projects that are currently in the works: a series of vodcasts concerned with the creative life, streaming video/audio of the Tobenski-Algera Concerts, and an album of my recent vocal works.

If you would like to discuss any of these projects, or think you could be of assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me at dennis[at]dennistobenski.com.

Website changes

Over the next few months, I’ll be working to streamline the site by migrating it to PHP.  You’ll notice that already the pages have “.php” extensions in preparation.  I’ve got a few nifty little PHP things happening to make my life simpler, but that haven’t changed the appearance at all.

You’ll also notice that I’ve added a few more options to the navigation bar.  I’ve finally got the message board/forum up and running, so I’ve linked that.  The look of the forum isn’t in its final form, but I’ve decided to put it up now and allow it to evolve over time.

The other additional navigation option is the storefront for the Tobenski Music Press (now officially registered with ASCAP), which I’ll be working on later this summer.

Also new to the site is the recording for “Letter from a Young Poet” from the 3 May 2008 Tobenski-Algera Concert.  Check it out!

Coming Soon: Message Board?

I’ve been working on a message board this past week that will be up and functional by the end of this coming week.  As soon as I’ve launched the board, stop by and check it out.  It’ll be a relatively informal place.  Be sure to stop by the poll I’ve got up to let me know how effective a tool you think it will be.

See you there!

More listening

Look for more audio coming soon to the “Listen” page.  I hope to upload the IonSound performance of Songs of Love & Madness, and possibly parts of the premiere of Starfish at Pescadero

Listening

I’ve finished the ”Listening” page of the site.  There are four pieces available for listening: till night is overgone, Sweet Briar Songs, And He’ll Be Mine, and Songs of Love & Madness.  More recordings will be added as they become available.
